There’s just something about fall that feels extra magical. The crisp air, cozy sweaters, that golden glow that dances through the trees — it’s no wonder it’s one of the most popular (and my personal favorite!) times for sessions. Whether it’s a couples session wrapped up in flannel, a senior shoot surrounded by golden leaves, or a cozy family walk through the woods, fall has a way of making every moment feel timeless.

So, let’s dive into all things fall sessions — from styling tips to location ideas, and even a little behind-the-scenes look at how I plan to catch those dreamy colors at their peak.

Styling Yourself for Fall Sessions

The best part about fall styling is how effortless and cozy it can be. Think soft layers, earth tones, and texture. Knits, corduroy, wool hats, and flowy dresses photograph beautifully this time of year.

Here are a few of my favorite fall styling tips:

  • Layer it up: Layers add depth and movement — a cardigan, flannel, or even a scarf can elevate your look (and give you something to play with during your session!).
  • Color palette: Warm neutrals like burnt orange, deep greens, beige, and rust complement the fall landscape perfectly. If you’re going for a bold pop, mustard or burgundy can look incredible against golden leaves.
  • Avoid matchy-matchy: Instead of identical outfits, aim for colors and textures that coordinate. Think cozy and natural rather than too polished.
  • Footwear matters: Fall often means uneven ground and chilly temps, so opt for boots or closed-toed shoes that are both stylish and practical.

When you feel good and comfortable, it shows — and that’s exactly what makes photos shine.

Location, Location, Location: Finding Your Fall Backdrop

Every fall session tells a slightly different story depending on the setting. Here are a few go-to types of locations and the kind of vibe they bring:

  • Wooded trails or forests: Perfect for that enchanted, storybook feeling — warm tones, natural light, and cozy intimacy surrounded by trees that seem to glow.
  • Open fields or meadows: Soft, romantic, and full of movement. These spots photograph beautifully at golden hour when the grass catches the sunlight.
  • Downtown or small-town streets: Bring on the charm! Think cozy coffee cups, light jackets, and maybe a little leaf-throwing among brick walls and vintage storefronts.
  • Lakesides or rivers: Reflective water adds a moody, painterly look — especially at sunrise or blue hour when the light is soft and even.
  • Pumpkin patches or orchards: Fun and playful — these are great for couples or families who want something unique and full of personality.

Each location gives a totally different energy, and I love helping clients choose one that feels most them.

The Light: How Time of Day Shapes Your Photos

Light can completely transform the feeling of your session. Here’s a quick breakdown of what to expect depending on when your session takes place:

Midday

Bright, vibrant, and full of contrast. Midday sessions can give a crisp, editorial feel — especially when we find pockets of shade or shoot in open fields where the light hits evenly.

Golden Hour

The classic favorite for a reason. This time (the hour before sunset) gives photos that creamy, glowing look — skin tones look soft, colors pop, and everything feels warm and romantic.

Blue Hour

The quiet, cinematic moment right after the sun slips away. The light turns cool and moody, creating a sense of stillness and depth. Blue hour photos often have that dreamy, film-like quality that feels both nostalgic and cinematic.

Behind the Scenes: How I Plan for Fall Sessions

One of the questions I get most often is “How do you know when the colors will peak?” The truth is — a lot of it comes from experience (and maybe a little obsession with watching the trees every day).

Throughout the year, I keep a close eye on Michigan’s color patterns, weather shifts, and even how early the mornings start to feel crisp. Typically, peak colors hit at slightly different times depending on where you are — northern spots might turn earlier, while southern areas hold their color a bit longer.

When you book a fall session with me, I always plan around your vision and location, keeping flexibility in mind to catch those colors at their best. It’s part of the fun for me — chasing that perfect moment where everything comes together just right.
